Friars attend annual Retreat
During first full week of January, the friars attended the province’s annual retreat. They were fortunate to have a friend of the province, Fr. Damian Higgins, a Byzantine Catholic priest and iconographer, share with us his reflections on the crucifix of San Damiano. This important icon, which spoke to St. Francis at the beginning of his conversion and called him to repair the church, is a Byzantine icon deep in imagery. Fifteen of the friars were led by Fr. Damian in painting, or writing, their own icons, which was not just an artistic endeavor but a prayerful exercise, an encounter with the Word of God made flesh. The friars are grateful to Fr. Damian not only for sharing his insights and talents as a teacher of iconography, but also his enthusiastic love of the Lord which he has shared with us.
